Technology and science are different areas of my enthusiasm for my self-directed pursuit of knowledge. I am a certified computer geek. I am literally on the computer from the time I get home from school till it’s time for me to take a bath and go to bed. I always try to expand my knowledge by learning about different things and people. I like to know what was used to make certain things and how certain things were made or came about. For instance the global positioning system how was it made? How did the idea even come about? And what tools and electronics were used to make it? Almost everybody in the world uses technology on an everyday basis from cell phones, lap tops, to the radio in your car all of those things were made with the help of technology and science. I want to be an anesthesiologist so it’s not surprising that I love science. I love the sensation of succeeding brilliantly at something so every time I get a good grade on an assignment or receive high praise from anyone I use that to boost my ego, and that makes me want to learn even more. Technology is evolving at a very fast speed and, there are new things being developed every day and science plays a big factor in that. I love to study science and technology because it challenges me. We wouldn’t have half of the things in the world if it wasn’t for science and technology. I will always have the passion to explore the world of technology and science as long as I am living.

Career Questions:

1.
Where do you want to be in five years? What type of education are you going to pursue after you get out of high school? Community college, four-year college, technical institute? Please be honest with yourself. If you have a 2.0 g.p.a. as a junior, you are not going to the University of Florida or Harvard. Are you going in the Armed Forces? If so, are you in JROTC? If not, why not? What branch of the Armed Forces and why that branch?

In five years after I finish high school and a four year college at a university, I want to be attending a medical school. To be honest I don’t know what exact field I want to go in yet but it’s out of anesthesiologist, psychologist, or I might attend dental school to become an orthodontist. I know that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to and I want to pursue a career in one of those fields. Another Option that I have considered is going to the Air Force and registering in the medical corps, and in there I could get all the education I need such as pre-med classes and I could attend medical school. I choose the Air Force because it’s not really physical but mainly mental and it focuses on education. I already signed for JROTC next year to give me the feeling of what to expect if I do join the Air Force. I have a bright and long future ahead of me but I am up for the ride.

2. Thinking ahead to the future, where do you want to be in 10 years with your career, family, etc. Have you researched this job or career? Shadowed anyone? Know anyone who is in this job or career? Why did you choose this particular job or career? What attributes do you have that would help you be a success in this area? Is there anything that might prevent you from accomplishing your goals? (money, grades, ability)—Please be honest with yourself. If you have trouble in math and science classes, you probably are not going to be a doctor. How much money do you think you can make at that job? How long do you think you will work before you can retire?
In ten years honestly I don’t know where I would be because life is so unexpected. But I would like to see myself married and hopefully have a child because in the medical field you have so much studying to do that you wouldn’t have time for a child at that moment, but I would most certainly love to have a child. I would be coming out of medical school or close to finishing. I would have chosen a career to pursue by then, but as of now I am not sure. I have done a career shadow at the Manatee Memorial Hospital for anesthesiology and I happened to like it. I’m not sure why I would like to pursue anesthesiology but it is something about it that intrigued me, and I could see myself establishing a career in that particular job. I find myself to be very smart and I know how to use my resources very well. I find English to be my strongest subject, but I am also pretty good in math in science. There isn’t anything in particular that would prevent me from achieving my goals that I have not already overcome; I have already gotten my grades back on track. As far as salaries go an anesthesiologist makes about 174, 610$ a year, A psychologist makes approximately 151, 380$ a year, and an orthodontist makes approximately 153, 290$ a year. Many people have told me that I want to pursue one of these careers because of the amount of money they make but that is not true at all. I want to pursue a career in one of those fields because they intrigue me and I see myself being happy doing those jobs, I don’t want to pursue a career in something that I don’t find interesting at all because then I wouldn’t be doing something that I don’t like, and I would hate my job. I could work about 30 years at one of those jobs before I could retire.

3. What are your educational goals:

This academic year: My academic goals for this year are to succeed in all my classes with A’s and B’s. When I receive my fourth quarter report card I would like for my cumulative grade point average to be either a 3.0 or a 3.1. I did terrible my first two years of high school and now I would like to make up for that because I know I have the potential to do much better.

Senior year: My academic goals for my senior year are to do excellent in all of my seven classes. Get all A’s and B’s. I don’t want to get a grade lower then a B and take advanced placement English four, anatomy honors, and algebra two honors. I want to participate in as many activities I can, Do a great amount of volunteering, and join FBLA. When I graduate I would like to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Post secondary: (This means after you graduate from high school)
When I enter college after I have finished high school, I will apply for pre-med classes. I want to do my very best in those classes and maintain high grades. I will try not to let the outside world distract me from my goals. When I am finished with college I will take the MCAT test to attend a medical school. Once I pass the test and get accepted into a medical school I will have to work even harder to stay above average and maintain high grades. When I am finish I would then have my MD, and I will start my job.

4. What have you done for your school or community? Have you volunteered, donated blood, etc.
I have done a little but not a whole lot for my community. I have participated in two walk for cancer events, and a walk for life event. I have volunteered at the boys and girls club in Bradenton, and I have donated blood a numerous amount of times. I plan on doing much more and being more involved this summer and even more volunteer work after that.

5. Have you considered some type of volunteer program for the summer that will advance you toward your goal? Would you be interested?
I have not only considered volunteering, I have already signed up to be a volunteer at the Manatee Memorial Hospital this summer in the surgery department. I recently just participated in a career shadow at the hospital and found it to be very valuable and rewarding for me in many ways. This will give me the opportunity to not only experience the everyday life of a person who has a job in the medical field, but give me the feeling of the atmosphere that I will be working in if I pursue a career in the medical field.

Reality Worksheet

I. Academic: You will answer the following questions for each academic area: English, math, science, social studies, and electives. How many credits do you have in each area? What type of grades do you have? Have you taken any honors or AP classes? How would you rate your aptitude? (Are you good at that subject? For instance, you may be a good writer or enjoy reading, but you haven’t done well in English.) Is your academic record going to prevent you from the career that you have chosen?

I have 1.5 credits in English, 2.5 math credits, 1.5 science credits, 1.5 social studies and 7 elective credits. As of now I am a C student. But this year I have all A’s and B’s. I have taken English 1 honors and I am taking AP literature next year along with algebra two honors, and anatomy honors and AP history. I am also re-taking my English two class because I didn’t do well in it my sophomore year so I’m taking English two honors online this summer to give my grade point average a boost. English is my strongest subject but I haven’t done well in it my high school years until now. I am also good in math and science. I really don’t have a weakness in any subject but I can learn more in the science department. I am focused now and more ambitious then ever so my academic record will not prevent me from pursuing my career.

II. Have you passed the FCAT? Have you taken the ACT or SAT? If you have not taken the ACT or SAT and plan to attend college, when do you plan to take it?

I am really focused on preparing for my future so I have already passed the FCAT; I passed it the first time I took it. I have not taken the ACT or the SAT yet but I plan on taking the ACT this upcoming summer. I plan on taking it multiple times to better my score.

III. How much is your post-secondary education going to cost? Have you researched this at all? How are you going to pay for it? Are you on track to receive any scholarship or grant money? Almost everyone can receive financial help for post secondary training. You may qualify based upon financial need or grades; however, your parents must be willing to fill out the FAFSA (financial aid application based on tax returns), and they must be legal American citizens. Private scholarships are available that do not depend on citizenship. For instance, you can receive scholarships if you are the first in your family to attend.

My post secondary education is going to cost me approximately 250,000$ or more. The average cost to attend a four year college is about 35,000$ or more for yearly tuition and fees. The average tuition for medical school the first year is $25,000. Additionally, there are fees for books, housing, meals, student fees, traveling, etc. Public Schools are about $10,000 if you’re an in state student. Out of state students can expect to pay over $22,000 for a public medical school. Many students take out loans to pay for medical school but end up in debt after graduation because it costs a lot of money to attend. Others join the US military in exchange for tuition, which I have considered to do if I don’t receive a scholarship, a grant, or a loan. But I’m really leaning towards joining the Air Force.
